I recently became a freelance blogger for the Huffington Post UK. With this role, I write personal and in-depth blog posts surrounding modern day issues and discussions points. Huffington Post are an international media organisation so this has provided me with a global viewership.

I have currently produced one blog post for the site. Even though it is unknown how many views it has received, it was shared worldwide via their social media. As well as Huffington Post journalists and editors also sharing the link.

My Role 

  •  Write my own emotive blog posts,
  • Adhere to the Huffington Post rules and guidelines,
  • Engage with my audience through comments and on social media,
  • Write at my own pace, setting own deadlines.

Skills Developed

  • Editorial,
  • Knowing how to navigate the Huffington Post dashboard,
  • Developing own voice,
  • Understanding what topics are “hot” at the moment,
  • Utilising social media to drive views.

I began to write for The Daily Touch at the end of August. I have produced three articles for the site so far. The Daily Touch is a student based online magazine, which specialises in listicles.

I have been a freelance contributor for BuzzFeed UK for around a year. With this role, I have focused more on creating content about Leicester and the East Midlands. BuzzFeed is an international media organisation so this provided me with expert experience in how to reach a wide audience with journalism.

I have produced a handful of content for the site. These listicles have an average readership of 40,000.

My Role 

  • Brainstorm my own ideas,
  • Pitch to relevant editor,
  • Write content on the BuzzFeed site,
  • Source my own photographs – and know how to credit them correctly,
  • Share content when published to drive views,
  • Utilise Dashbird to monitor reads and shares of each listicle.

  • Sourcing my own images easily,

Tab

I have been a freelance writer for The Tab for 8 months. In this time, I have produced many articles for the site, as well as taking an active role in organising the Leicester site, along with the editor. The Tab is a media organisation which is aimed specifically at students. It prides itself in producing content which is different but also engaging with the intended audience. This allowed me to produce articles in my preferred writing style.

I have produced 13 articles for the site, with them receiving over 46,000 reads and over 5,000 Facebook shares.

My Role 

  • Develop my own ideas into stories,
  • Work fast with relevant news,
  • Create my own deadlines for myself,
  • Source and credit all images used within articles,
  • Share content when published to drive views,
  • Engage audiences with the Leicester site – and its social media profiles.

In 2016, I did some work experience with Trinity Mirror owned, Leicester Mercury. I was invited after I had previously contacted the editor with a story about a mouse that had been found in a local supermarket. I noticed that the newspaper had not covered the story, so decided to get into contact in case they wanted my finished article. They did. A few months later, they asked if I wanted to do some work experience with them.

I produced four stories within my time at the newspaper, which were all published.

My Role 

  • I was an acting junior reporter,
  • Source my own stories,
  • Keep an eye on social media for developing stories,
  • Work closely with editors on press release stories,
  • Read through reader’s letters,
  • Do Voxpops.

Skills Developed

  • Confidently performing Voxpops,
  • Sticking to very strict deadlines,
  • Understanding the newspaper journalistic style,
  • The Leicester Mercury software.

In 2016, I did some work experience with PR company, Unsworth Sugden. This provided me with excellent experience into the PR industry, and ensured that I was able to apply my expertise as a journalist to the company.

My Role

  • Update the blog regularly,
  • Update media lists and contact books,
  • Write press releases,
  • Interview employees for monthly newsletter,
  • Produce a leaflet for residents in the Kingsbrooke area.

Skills Developed

  • Produce press releases quickly,
  • Understand the workings of the PR industry more,
  • How to update media lists through the relevant databases.

During the first two years of university, I have been a freelancer for the site, Birmingham Eastside. I have produced a handful of articles for the media organisation. Birmingham Eastside is affiliated with my university so a vast amount of the articles featured on the site, actually derive from module work.

My Role

  • Produce content to a high standard,
  • Produce content about Birmingham Eastside,
  • Localise national stories,
  • Work fast, and to a deadline,
  • Interview the relevant individuals.

Skills Developed 

  • To always search for a more interesting angle,
  • To utilise different techniques and software to add value to a story.

In my first year of university, I did some work experience with Pukaar Magazine. The magazine is based in Leicester and prides itself in celebrating the diversity of the city.

I produced around five articles for the 16th edition, including a fashion piece, a history piece, a travel piece, an interview with an author and a piece on freight trains.

My Role

  • To research independently,
  • Understand the Pukaar journalistic style,
  • Conduct interviews to a high standard,
  • Work actively with Pukaar News and ITV News,
  • Set my own deadlines for checks with the editor.

Skills Developed 

  • To be versatile with what I can produce,
  • Working well under pressure,
  • To be able to work out of my comfort zone, to the best of my ability,
  • How to conduct interviews over Skype.
